Although the thought of seeing another movie based on a suddenly popular book series worried us, we decided the good reviews would be enough to warrant a watch. Thankfully, we were pleasantly surprised to find a very well made movie with an almost perfect mixture of action, Sci-fi, and drama.  That is rare in a film with this amount of book based anticipation.  You will be glad to know that this is in no way like the travesty that is/was Twilight.  In fact, the trailer for the next Twilight film although obviously intending to be serious elicited more than a muted chuckle from a few folks in the theater. Enough of that comparison though.

The Hunger Games Movie Review

We had little expectations for The Hunger Games and did not know much about the plot.  It turns out that the director did not play the M. Night Shyamalan card and assume the audience was only going to be filled with 5 year old children who needed to have each plot turn explained multiple times through the dialogue.  Instead, Gary Ross actually trusts that the audience will be able to understand or at least gather enough information along the way to rather enjoy a small amount of mystery.  We admit, the fact that we have not read the books did require me to “go with it” a little, but we love that in any film (except bad ones I guess), it is what makes it exciting.  After a few minutes of the movie you are drawn in by the good acting and obvious care taken with directing and scripting.  The strange world you are thrown into has enough substance that it does not matter that it is completely different from ours.

Even though we haven’t heard anyone say the movie was better than the book, those that have read the books seem to have really liked the movie.  Being able to have low expectations and very little prior knowledge of the story, we really enjoyed it and are very excited about the rest of the movies coming out.  As long as they continue to make the movies with this amount of quality we are sure they will be great.  This movie has a little for everyone with some romance, some comedy, action, Sci-fi, adventure, drama, thriller, and fantasy.  We like how they incorporate so much into it without overdoing it.  It is not perfect, no movie is, but it is well worth a visit to the theater even for the $11.50 we paid for the ticket.  Of course they are ruining it with 3D like every other movie made these days, but at least you have the choice or at least we did.

The Hunger Games Movie Rating

So you might wonder what The Hunger Games is about and possibly want to know a little about it in order to decide if you would like to see it, but we are not writing to tell you the story.  You can read plot summaries or ask anyone who has read the book for that.  Or better yet, why not go without any prior knowledge and enjoy the show.  A movie is almost always better if you don’t know what to expect.  This movie will not be for everyone and does have some intense moments and a dark overall theme, but as long as you can live with a little of that you should be fine.  It is rated PG-13 so it is not ever too graphic or unnecessarily riddled with language as many movies are; the intensity is probably somewhere in between Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. If you are looking for a good movie in the theaters right now then this should be at the top of your list.
