Hostgator vBulletin Forum Installation: vBulletin is a PHP-based forum software. This software makes it possible for website owners to create and maintain a web forum with a large number of users. The latest versions of vBulletin allow the site owner to use plugins with the vBulletin software, to customize the program to meet their needs. All of HostGator’s hosting options support vBulletin, including their shared hosting plans. For practical purposes, most vBulletin users may want to choose a VPS plan (for heavy traffic) instead of a shared hosting plan when it comes to putting up their forum. Forums can demand a lot of resources, which can end up being a problem for sites hosted on a shared server. To help protect the other sites on the server, HostGator may throttle resources to the forum, resulting in slow service or down time. This isn’t an issue with a virtual private server, however.
vBulletin Forum Installation on Hostgator
Because vBulletin is commercial software, HostGator customers will have to have paid for vBulletin before they can install it. For this reason, it isn’t available for HostGator’s one-click installation like open source programs like WordPress are. Instead, HostGator customers will have to create an SQL database through MySQL, and go through manual installation in order to use vBulletin on their HostGator account. Fortunately, installing vBulletin isn’t complicated, and HostGator’s support team, video tutorials, and user forums can help new vBulletin users through the process.
HostGator offers their customers MySQL and cPanel, which make it easier to use vBulletin. vBulletin requires SQL databases to install and function properly, and MySQL makes creating these databases fast and easy. cPanel is the industry standard when it comes to web hosting control panels. This means that, unlike some proprietary control panel programs, it has been tested out with vBulletin. But vBulletin and cPanel are extremely popular all across the internet, and there are not likely to be any conflicts between the two. Once vBulletin is properly installed, it should work fine on just about any HostGator account.
One thing that vBulletin users should be aware of is HostGator’s policy toward spam. HostGator will suspend an account for sending out spam, so it’s important for vBulletin users on shared accounts to avoid sending out mass e-mails in large groups. Instead, they should attempt to send their mass e-mails out in smaller batches, or avoid sending them at all. This can be a hassle, so vBulletin users with large mailing lists that foresee having to send out mass e-mails in the future may want to opt for a VPS hosting plan instead of shared hosting.
HostGator has an excellent reputation as a web host. They offer shared plans, VPS plans, dedicated servers, and even reseller hosting. All of their plans support the use of a variety of software from Drupal to vBulletin, making them a great choice of host for a vBulletin-based forum. Since shared hosting may not work as well with vBulletin as a virtual private server would, vBulletin users may wish to choose one of HostGator’s many VPS plans instead of a shared plan.
